“This carved Albatross and its accompanying sketched ideas were specifically conceived in celebration of the Gibbons Tercentenary. Dead game birds and fish were a recurring theme in Gibbons’ work, however this carving is the antithesis of the beauty and splendour which Gibbons portrayed. Here we have the contemporary version of a dead bird, its ugliness a consequence of humans’ interference with nature. Our disgorgement of non biodegradable materials has been the undoing of this beautiful creature. The poet, Baudelaire, born 1821, exactly 100 years after Gibbons’ death, refers to man’s irreverence for nature in his poem L’Albatross. Here, bored sailors capture the majestic Albatross in order to torment and ultimately destroy him. Now, 300 years after Gibbons, human behaviour has again made a casualty of this innocent feathered vertebrate .” Peter Thuring

This exhibition marks the culmination of a series of events at Petworth commemorating the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown.

The great gardener's landscape parks, such as Petworth were primarily designed as works of art. While many of the trees within Petworth Park have subsequently been classified as 'ancient' or 'veteran', Peter Thuring has worked in the creative spirit of Brown to celebrate their extraordinary visual qualities.  - Andrew Loukes

The Dodo was designed and carved out of Lime wood,for

Dillingham & Company New York. Polychrome finish on a gesso ground

set on a walnut base.

Project; to construct, carve, decorate and gild a copy of the Servery Table in Scots Pine,

     being one of a pair lost in the UPPARK HOUSE fire .

Timber of the same density and growth as used in the original table was sourced in the north of Scotland from the Balmoral Estate

and converted into planks by Sven of Nordbuild Timber Fabrications.

Society of Dilettanti Ballot box. An ornamental carved casket carved by Thomas Adye in 1738 dipicting the Tomb of Bachus.

The ballot box is carved in mahogany embellished with an ivory carving of Bachus.

 Project;  to carve in ivory the missing arm.

Conservation of Gilded surfaces consisting of:

Surface cleaning  of water gilding and oil gilding

Consolidation of gesso layers 

Restoration to missing gesso areas of gilded and polychrome surfaces

Gilding  of newly restored areas and toning new gold to match original

Retouching of restored gesso to match the original polychrome surface

   The ivory throne, being part of The Great Exhibition, was presented to Queen Victoria by the Maharajah of Travancore in 1851.

The throne and footstool are now on display at Windsor Castle .

Project; to carve in ivory, a missing ivory lion and part of the damaged ivory balustrade from the footstool.

This gilded suite of furniture was designed in 1758 by James 'Athenian' Stuart for the Painted Room Spencer House St. James London.

The suite now belongs to the Victoria and Albert Museum and was given on loan to Spencer House

after the restoration of the State Rooms by Lord Jacob Rothchild.

The project; conservation of the gilding and upholstery, plus re-instatement of tufting and green damask silk on eight chairs and four sofas.

Designs on commission modeled in wax, clay or plaster, cast in resin, bronze, fired terracotta or other materials of choice.

Project; to make lost wax sculpture and cast in bronze.

A set of four sofas after a drawing of Robert Adam and made by John Linnell during the period 1762-1765 for the Drawing Room at Kedleston Hall.

Project; the conservation of gilded surfaces, removal of bronze overpainting and restoration of missing carvings.

Restoration of original upholstery profile, recovering of sofas in rewoven silk-wool damask

and re-introduction of the original tuffting scheme.

 Project;  to achieve a match of this chair to the other pair already in the Getty collection

by removal of oil gilding and gesso layer,

rebuilding of gesso layer, re-cutting gesso to mirror decoration on existing chairs,

 water gild in 24 carat gold, burnish and patine of gold to match.

Painted hall chair made by Chippendale for the Top Hall of Nostell Priory.

Chair suffered fire damage when the Breakfast Room fire spread to the hall.

Project : to remove the charred wood whilst saving as much of the original timber as possible.

To replace the burnt sections of legs, seat rail, seat, arm and back with Lime wood .

To carve mouldings and decorative ornament in the new sections of Lime wood.

Finish in polychrome and match the newly painted surface to the original texture and patina.
